Stop Applying Everywhere: The 10-Application Strategy That Works
You’ve been told to “apply everywhere.”
Bad advice.
Here’s what works instead: send exactly 10 targeted applications a week.
Each one researched. Each one tailored. Each one followed up on.
Why 10?
Because it’s the sweet spot: enough volume to create momentum, but small enough that every application gets the attention it deserves.
My clients using this method often get more interviews from 10 quality applications than others do from 50+ copy-paste ones — just like the Focused Closer profile I talk about here.
Why More Applications = Worse Results
When you send 50+ applications a week:
You don’t research the company enough.
You recycle the same resume and cover letter.
You can’t track follow-ups properly.
This makes you look like every other desperate applicant.
If you want to stand out, you need focus — and a system.
The 10-Application Strategy
Here’s how to make 10 applications outperform 50:
Pick your targets — Choose 10 open roles that match at least 80% of your skills.
Deep research — Learn the hiring manager’s name, the company’s current priorities, and their biggest challenges.
Customize your resume — Rewrite bullets to match the company’s language (see Your Resume Has a Math Problem — Not a Format Problem for how to quantify your impact).
Craft a tight cover note — 5–6 sentences max, showing you understand their needs.
Follow up twice — Once a week after applying, with value-added notes or insights.
Track everything — Use a spreadsheet, CRM, or even a notebook so nothing slips through.
Why This Wins
Higher response rates (my clients average 40–50%)
More interviews from fewer applications
You stand out as intentional, not desperate
It’s a quality over quantity play — just like I explained in Why Nobody Replies to Your Applications (Even If You’re Qualified).
You Don’t Need More “Tips” — You Need a Teardown
Your resume is the first thing they see.
